sNova VPN Download on theApp Store

How much data does a VPN use?

A VPN does not create traffic; it wraps the traffic you already have. The wrapping adds a few percent. What matters more is that everything you send while the VPN is on counts against your allowance, so it helps to know what a gigabyte buys.

The overhead of the tunnel

Each packet gets a small header when it enters the tunnel. On typical use that is between 3 and 10 percent on top of what the apps themselves send. Video, music and downloads are big packets, so the overhead is at the low end; messaging and web browsing are small packets, so it is a bit higher, but the total is small anyway.

What the free allowance is enough for

Web browsing and messaging: dozens of hours. Music streaming: many hours at normal quality. Maps: an afternoon of navigation uses very little. Video calls: a few hours. Video streaming: a couple of hours in standard quality, less in HD.

In other words, the free allowance comfortably covers the moments a VPN is for: public Wi‑Fi, a network that blocks an app, a trip. It will not cover a month of streaming; that is what Unlimited is for.

How sNova counts

Only bytes that pass through the tunnel are counted. With the VPN off, nothing is used. The ring on the main screen shows the traffic used today and over the last 30 days, and the allowance left, so you always know where you stand. The speed test uses a small amount per run and says so before you start.

Getting more

Invite a friend: when they install sNova and start using it, you both get extra traffic, up to a monthly cap. Or switch to Unlimited and stop counting.

Questions

Does the VPN use data when it is turned off?

No. Nothing goes through the tunnel and nothing is counted.

Does the free traffic reset every month?

No. The allowance is granted once per device and does not expire. Referral bonuses add to it; Unlimited removes the limit.

Where do I see how much I have used?

On the main screen: the ring shows today, the current period and what is left.
